The Mermaid

$3.00

A little mermaid dreams of going to La la land to become a film star. But her father has other ideas.

‘Mer’ is a French word for the sea; a maid usually cleans up after everyone. Put ‘Mer’ and ‘maid’ together, and in this case you have a very disappointed little person. 5 stanzas of 4 lines each.

THE MERMAID

by Michele Lourie c 2017

Boo hoo hoo, cried the little mermaid,

Her tears falling many and fast,

Raising the depth of the ocean

Thus making it even more vast.

A clown fish attempted to cheer her

The electric eel flashed his bright light,

But nothing at all made a difference

As she bawled straight from morning to night.

“Stop now,” the soldier crab ordered

“Tell us, what is the matter with you?”

The mermaid tried talking through hiccups,

And you know that’s not easy to do.

“Oh how (hic) I’ve wanted (hic) to leave here

Get away (hic) from tsunamis and sand (hic)

I want to become a great film star (hic)

In that magical place (hic), la la land.

But my father, King Neptune, made me stay here,

I really think he is so mean,

He says that my job as a mer – MAID

Is to KEEP ALL THE SEVEN SEAS CLEAN (hic)”
