When asked to take the ‘school’ frog home to look after over the holidays – you wouldn’t expect the amphibian to comment on your reading choices. 6 stanzas of 4 lines each.
THE CLEVER FROG
Michele Lourie c 2016
Our school is environmentally friendly
With everything painted bright green
The vegetable garden has beans and tomatoes
The biggest that you’ve ever seen.
We study all kinds of interesting creatures
From rabbits to beetles to mites,
These we sometimes take home to look after
Over a couple of days and nights.
One frog we call Frederick lives in our classroom
He’s been there for ever and ever
His eyes might look glassy but I’m very certain
That Frederick is terribly clever.
These holidays past I was given the honour
Of taking young Frederick home
But when he was placed on the floor of my bedroom
This amphibian decided to roam.
First he hopped to the bathroom, inspecting the sink
With an earnestness somewhat alarming
As though he was checking out his new surroundings
To find them less than charming.
Next he jumped to my book case with effortless ease
A feat I could hardly credit
To look over each book and croak with disdain,
“I’ve reddit, reddit reddit, and reddit!”
