Mother Kangaroo must put up with her children playing inside – inside her pouch – on a rainy day. 4 stanzas of 4 lines each.
RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY …… by Michele Lourie
Down by the billabong, beneath a gum tree,
Ma Kangaroo stood, quite forlorn.
She’d been waiting and hoping the storm would let up
Having pelted down since dawn.
A frilly-necked lizard came from under a log
Droplets shining on his blue-flecked hide.
“Hello, Mrs Roo, and how do you do?”
The marsupial’s eyes opened wide.
“I’d be better,” the kangaroo said with a twitch,
“If the rain would just stop for a touch.
I hate rainy days, I end up quite crazed,
For me it is really too much.”
“But why?” asked the reptile, “when the earth is so dry.”
She looked at him sadly, then sighed.
“You see, when it rains my pouch suffers such pains,
‘Cos the kids have to play inside!”
