OWL’S LARYNGITIS
Michele Lourie c 2016
The owl is known as a wise old bird
Who likes to give advice,
His brain is sharp, and some suggest
It’s because he mostly eats mice.
A delegation of rodents formed
To deliver a petition
To persuade the bird to change his diet
Of his own volition.
When the group arrived to present the form
The Barn Owl did not speak,
He wrote a message that he’d lost his voice
At the very start of the week.
But the mice refused to give up as
They felt their request was fair.
Still the silent owl was unwavering –
All he did was stare.
Insisting the meeting go ahead
Was a fatal thing to do,
For in one fell swoop the owl pounced
And the rodents left were few.
The survivor’s complaints remained ignored
And before they were able to scoot
The owl ate the rest, then in a clear hand
Wrote “I could not give a hoot!”
