FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL
by Michele Lourie c 2016
The first day of school was so busy
Filled with games and lots of noise.
The teacher was trying hard to learn
All the names of the girls and boys.
One mother was very persistent
In describing her child with pride.
Every time the teacher turned around
This parent was there by her side.
“Our girl is remarkably clever,
At five she can do lots of things.”
The mother enthused, smiling brightly,
“She loves music, she dances and sings.
“But let me tell you her greatest achievement,
As against it, these others are tame.”
“And what’s that?” asked the kindly teacher.
“Why she’s able to spell her name.”
The teacher showed some disappointment,
“Most five-year-olds can spell their name.”
“Yes, but not backwards as well as forwards,
To my daughter it’s just the same.”
“I’m impressed,” came the quick reaction,
“That is certainly something quite new.”
Then the mother called to her daughter,
“ANNA – show the teacher what you can do!”
