AN ORCHESTRA’S VOICE
by Michele Lourie 2017
First movement starts softly
Violins swoop and soar
“We are sure when you hear us
You’ll be asking for more.”
Piano plays a warning
“Re e e e straint, please,
Just follow the notes
In the shades of my keys.”
Percussion takes heed
Feathering tympany.
“Only wait for the climax,
Then you will see.”
A crescendo of brass
Next amplifies sound.
Trumpets blare, trombones flare,
Swirling out and around.
“Hush” ripples the harp
Liquid tones soothing.
“I’m partnering the cello,
Our part is so moving.”
Bassoons lead the woodwinds
Rhythm kept tight
“We have plenty of breath,
We could do this all night.”
All parts come together
In melodies sweet,
Rising and falling
In time to the beat.
Our concert is over,
The audience sighs.
The orchestra members
Must say their goodbyes.
But wait, there is one
We have not mentioned yet
And that’s the conductor
How could we forget?
