BREAK A LEG

by Michele Lourie

(enters – runs across stage – makes obvious peeping through opposite side curtain. Steps back and does nervous jump)

ACTOR:

Sorry, sorry, I’ll be quiet. I am soooo nervous. I put my name down to try out for the end-of-year concert, but there are soooo many great acts trying out. Most of them are from the big kid’s classes – like Judy Meakin. She’s on now. She’s doing the ‘singing glasses’ – you know, when you rub your finger around the top of each glass filled with water to a certain height and ……

(stops) OOPS! That sounded like breaking glass. Poor judy.

I wonder who’s next. (peeps through the curtain)

It’s Zane Porter. He’s got a great singing voice. Our singing teacher says he can reach high C. But, when he was practising in the dressing room, his voice did a funny wobble, like this.

(demonstrates a voice breaking)

I offered him one of my throat lozenges but …..

(stops – runs – peeps – makes face)

He sound like a bass singer, not a tenor, now. Very, very, low.

(demonstrates)

It’s Annie’s turn. Annie’s in the class above me and she’s a juggler. Every lunch hour she spends juggling fruit she borrows from all the other kids. She throws them up and catches them and ……

(stops in the middle of demonstrating and peeps behind the curtain)

I’m next so, while they’re cleaning the squishy orange off the stage, I’ll practise.

(does some acrobatics)

Here goes. This could be my big break.

(cartwheels, then slides to the floor crying OW! As she hobbles off stage)

Probably shouldn’t have said that!
